Question
Later in the semester you will synthesize a mixture of 2-methyl-1-butene
and 2-methyl-2-butene. The relative proportion of each product formed will be determined by
GC analysis; both products will be assumed to have the same response factor.
Why is this a reasonable assumption for those products, but not for cyclohexane
and toluene?( A correct answer will describe the molecular formula and structure of the two sets of
molecules; and discuss how these factors will influence how the GC analyzes the
relative populations are determined to support your answer)
Explanation / Answer
2-methyl-1-butene and 2-methyl-2-butene have the same functional group, molecular formula and thus molecular weight. Since these compounds are identical in molecular formula GC analysis will produce the same response factor since this is calculated based on % composition.
Cyclohexane and Toluene have different fucntional groups and molecular formulas. As a result cyclohexane (C6H12) and Toluene (C7H8) will have different response rates.
