Question
1. Blood is composed of plasma (a clear fluid with various proteins and ions) and cells (the overwhelming majority of which are RBCs). The hematocrit (volume fraction of cells) in human blood is typically 0.40, whereas that for bovine blood is 0.35. Also, human plasma has a protein concentration of 75 g/L, whereas bovine plasma has a protein concentration of 100 g/L.
We wish to perform some tests for a pump that will be used as a component in a heart lung machine (for humans). Because it is so readily available, we will use bovine blood, instead of human blood. To obtain good data, we will
Explanation / Answer
protien conc in human blood= 75 g/l
given 10 litres
so amount of protein = 75 x 10= 750 g
Protein conc og bovine blood= 100g/l
we have 750 g of protein .let the volume be v
so protien con c= 750/v = 100
so V= 7.5 L
so we have to start with 7.5 L of Bovine Blood.
But it shoulb be made to 75 g/l so we need to add V1 L of water
so total volume = V1 +7.5
so protein conc= 750/(V1+7.5)=75
so V1=2.5
so 2.5 L of water shoul be added.
volume of Bovine blood= 7.5 L
required volume fraction = 0.40
volume of plasma/total volume=0.40
volume of Blood/10=0.4
volume of blood= 4 L
the volume of Bovine blood should be 4 L.
anmount to dilute plasma to be removed= 7.5-4=3.5 L
