In the movie, Raiders Of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones replaces a golden statue with a similar sized bag of sand on a weight bearing alarm. If the alarm is tripped, he will find himself in a life threatening booby trap. If not, the gold statue is his. For fun, lets assume the statue is in the shape of a gold cylinder and the sand is in a can. It so happens that the can of sand and the gold cylinder are exactly the same dimensions (length = 21 cm and radius = 4.1 cm)
a) What is the mass of each cylinder? Ignore the mass of the can itself and show your calculations. (Density of gold = 19.3 g/cm3, density of sand = 3.00 g/cm3)

To find mass from density, you need the equation Density= Mass/Volume or D= M/V.
volume is same in both cases. so let us first find the Volume of a cylinder with length h=21cm, and radius r=4.1cm.
The volume of the cylinder must be calculated first, using the formula
V = ? r^2h
=22*(4.1)^2*21
=7766.22cm^3
a) Mass of the golden statue = Density of gold * Volume
= 19.3 g/cm^3*7766.22cm^3
= 149888.04 grams = 149.88 kg
Mass of the can = Density of sand * Volume
= 3 g/cm^3*7766.22cm^3
= 23298.66 grams
= 23.298kg
b) the mass of the two cylinders are not equal so the weighted alarm will trip
