Question
There is a question in my Orgo homework and it is asking for a method to separate phenol from a mixture containing benzene, benzoic acid, phenol and methyl benzoate. I thought of distillation but I am not sure if distillation work for compounds with boiling point higher than 150 degrees Celcius. THe boiling point is:
Benzene: 80.1 oC
Phenol: 181.7oC
Benzoic acid: 249.2 oC
Methyl benzoate -15 oC
Explanation / Answer
firstly you can try to dissolve them in NaOH...only phenol and benzoic acid will be soluble
now we need to decide between phenol and benzoic acid
react solid sodium bicarbonate with both of them.
phenol will not react whereas benzoic acid will react to give CO2 gas which turns lime water mily
