Dopamine is one of the very important neurotransmitters. Improper amount and functioning of dopamine has been found to be associated with Parkinson's disease. Dopamine is synthesized in the neurons and remains stored in the vesicles. When a nerve impulse reaches the neuron, it is released by the presynaptic neuron into the synaptic cleft usually by exocytosis. Dopamine then reaches the post-synaptic neuron and binds to specific receptors. This binding results in generation of impulse in the post synaptic neuron. Then, dopamine dissociates from the receptors and is again taken back by the presynaptic neuron, where it is either degraded or repackaged into vesicles.

2. A nerve impulse travels to the presynaptic neuron.
