For the following fatty acids determine the number of ATP you would get from beta oxidation followed by entry into TCA and track a label at the terminalcarbon (carbon 12 for (a) and carbon 13 for (b)) and show where it would turn up in oxaloacetate in the first round of TCA
(a) 12:2c delta 4,8

(b) 13:2c delta 5,9

I am having trouble with this, I know how to show the beta oxidation of fatty acids without double bonds, but we were not shown how the process is done with double bonds. If you can please show the outcome of each round, that would be helpful! Thank you.

b) oxidation of a fatty acid with 13 atoms of carbon :

    Activation of fatty acid : - 2 ATP

Number of round in beta oxidation : 13/2 - 1.5 = 6.5 - 1.5 = 4

              4 rounds X 5 ATP / round = 20 ATP

Number of acetyl coA produced : 7 Acetyl coA

7 Acetyl coA X 12 ATP / Acetyl coA : 84

Priopnyl coA up succinly coA     : 1 ATP

Succinyl coA up to malate : 3 ATP

Pyruvate to AcetylcoA : 3ATP

Acetyl coA oxidation in kerb cycle : 12 ATP

Total ATP : -2 + 3+3+12+84+20 = 100 ATP
