Question

The Boiling point of pure benzoic acid was determined to be 122 degrees centigrade.

then impure benzoic acid (a small quantity of sodium chloride has been added) was dissolved in Hot deionized water and then taken off, allowed to cool to room temperature, and then placed in an ice bath where crystals began to form. After the crystals were filtered and dried the re-crystalized (lab purified) benzoic acid had a boiling point of 110 degrees centegrade. WHAT WOULD CAUSE THE DIFFERENCE IN BOILING POINT????

Explanation / Answer

The difference in the boiling point is caused because of the electrophilic aromatic substitiotn in the benzene ring when it is mixed with impure benzene which contains small amount of sodium chloride. basically it has chloride ions which will attack benzene ring and attach to one of the carbons thereby reducing the ideal boiling pont of benzene.
