Question

How do you know when to draw a single/double/triple bond when drawing Lewis Structures? I need a good answer because I still don't understand Lewis Strucctures.

2.BOND MATH!
-Used to determine the total number of bonds in a molecule or ion
-Forumula: Number of Bonds = (number of octet electrons - number of valance electrons)/(2)
-Example of Bond math: PCl3. There are 4 atoms so 4 times 8 (octet) = 32. And P (5 valance)
plus 7 times 3 (three Cl atoms in the molecule and Cl has 7 valence electrons) equals 26. So,
(32-26)/(2)= 3 Bonds.

How do you get the number of octet electrons? I don't see how they got 4 atoms????

Explanation / Answer

octet means a total of outer orbit 8 electron stable configuration of an atom.

pcl3 has 4 atoms..1 P and 3 Cl atoms..each atom has achieved octec configuration by forming the compound.

so no of octet electrons is 4*8=32.

and we know..valence electrons of P is 5 and Cl is 7.

they share electrons..covalent bond.

3 Cl atoms share 1 electron each with P giving it 5+3 =8 electron octet outer orbit configuration.

similarly each Cl atoms shares an electron with P acquiring 7+1 =8octet configuration.
