Question

Question 3: Force a) You've collected a bag of 25 apples. If an apple has an average mass of 100grams, what is the total mass, in kilograms, of the bag of apples? Calculate the weight of the bag of apples b) You and two friends are pushing on a small boulder to get it to roll down a hillside. If the resistive force of the boulder (caused by friction) pushes against you and your friends with 180 Newtons; and, if you push on the rock with 79 Newtons of force, with what force will each of your friends need to push to get the boulder to move? Assume the three of you will need to total 181 Newtons to move the boulder.

Explanation / Answer

Given,

n = 25 ; m = 100 g ;

one apple is 100 g so 25 apples will be:

m = 25 x 100 = 2500 h

we know that, 1kg = 1000 g

m = 2.5 kg

Hence, m = 2.5 kg

W = mg

W = 2.5 x 9.81 = 24.53 N

Hence, W = 24.53 N

b)n = 3 ; Fr = 180 N ; Fp = 79 N

Ft = 181 N

The force that two friend need to exert:

F(2f) = 181 - 79 = 102 N

the force that each of them needs to exert

F(f) = 102/2 = 51 N

Hence, F(f) = 51 N
