Question
A reaction vessel at 27 degrees C containsa mixture of SO2 (P = 3.10 atm) and 02 (P=1.10 atm). When a catalyst is added to the reaction 2SO^2(g) + O2 (g) = 2SO3 (g) takes place. At equilibrium the total pressure is 3.95 atm. Find the value of Kc. PLEASE help! I've been trying to figure it our for a while now! At equilibrium the total pressure is 3.95 atm. Find the value of Kc. PLEASE help! I've been trying to figure it our for a while now!Explanation / Answer
At equilibrium the total pressure is 3.95 atm.
2 SO2 + O2 <----> 2 SO3
initial pressure
3.10 .. . . 1.10
change
3.10 - 2x. . 1.10-x .. . . 2x
3.10 - 2x + 1.10 -x + 2x = 3.95
0.25 = x
2x = 0.5
3.10 - 0.5 =3.05
1.10 - 0.25 = 0.85
Kp = (0.50)^2 / (3.05)^ x 0.85 =0.0969
T = 27 + 273 = 300
delta n = -1
Kc = Kp / (RT)^delta n
Kc = 0.0969 / ( 0.0821 x 300)^-1 = 2.34
