Question

1. regarding solution of Benzene and toluene that exhibits ideal behavior a. What will be the composition in terms of mole percentages of a benzene-toluene solution that has a vapor pressure of 71.5 torr at 25 degree C? at 25 degree C, P^0 benzene = 95.0 torr, and P^0 toulene = 28.0 tor N benzene = ? N toulene = ? b. what will be partial pressure in torr of the two component in solution at 25 degree C? C. what will be the composition of the vapor at the boiling point of the solution? report the composition in terms of mole percentages. N'Benzene = ? N' Toluene = ? thanks

Explanation / Answer

you need a modification Raoult's law. The totalvapor pressureis equal to the vapor pressures of the individual gases (law of Partial pressures). Ptot = Pbenzene + Ptoluene. Raoults law says that the pressure of each component is given by the mole fraction of that component times the vapor pressure of the pure component (written as Po - usually the o is a superscript). Now it's a matter of some algebra to fugure out the original composition of the initial solution. If you call the mole fraction of benzene in the original solution "X", then the mole fraction of toluene is 1-X. Because the mole fractions of the two compounds were each 0.5 in the vapor, we can say that:

Po(benzene).X = Po(toluene).(1-X)

750 X = 300 (1-X)

Solving for X:
750X = 300 - 300X
1050X = 300, so X = 300/1050 = 0.286. Multiply by 100 to get the mole %, and you get answer
