Question
The follwowing questions are based on the maps of average January sea level temperatuers (Figure 10-1) and average July sea level temperatures (figure 10-2) Comapring the January map with the July Map , describe one region of the world that exhibits a large annual temeprature range (the difference between the Januray and July average tempratures ) b. What explains this large annual temperature range c. Describe one region of the world that exhibits a small annual temperature range d. What explains this small annual tempertaure range ?Explanation / Answer
describe one region of the world that exhibits a large annual temeprature range
What explains this large annual temperature range
Extremes occur because they are continental type climate. Latitude is the main factor. Fairly direct sun rays in the summer that can really warm the area and of course in the winter the direct rays are way south. remember that the area you are talking about is closer to the north pole than it is the equator.
Much of the temperature has to do with the movement of jet stream.
In the winter the jet stream tends to drop down into the U.S.A. causing the Arctic Air mass to be pulled down putting the area into a deep freeze.
The fact that the areas are inland (continental)
The fact that the latitude is higher
The fact that the jet stream controls the arctic air mass
ALL contribute to the annual extremes.
Areas in between the Tropic of Capricorn and Cancer. There is little variance in annual temperature as their is little variance in solar radiation. In the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, solar radiation varies widely from season to season, causing large shifts in temperatures.
