Question
Experiment 3 Post-Lab Questions: Summarize the solubility behavior of hydrocarbons in water (a polar solvent) and in polar organic solvents. Write the products for the following set of reactants and conditions: CH4 + Br2 + sunlight rightarrow cH3 HBr CH4 + Br2rightarrow CH4 + Br2 H2C=CH2 + Br2 + sunlight rightarrow H2C=CH2+Br2 rightarrow BrH2C - CH2Br Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulas are called? Give an example of two compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulas.Explanation / Answer
1) Always remember this simple chemistry rule. 'Like' dissolves 'Like'. It will help you out throughout your studies.
Hydrocarbons are non polar and water is polar. If hydrocarbons and water mix, it will disrupt the H-bonds and dipole forces between H2O molecules. That would be highly unfavorable. As a result, water and hydrocarbons will form 2 layers. An aqueous layer (layer with polar molecules, ions, and H2O) and an organic layer, where all hydrophobic molecules will reside. By the same reasoning, hydrocarbons would likely dissolve well in non-organic solvents.
3) isomers
4) glucose and fructose, they're structural isomers which means they have the same molecular formula of C6H12O6
