Question
A mouse is placed in a sealed chamber with air at 754.0 torr. This chamber is equipped with enough solid KOH to absorb any CO2 and H2O produced by the mouse. The gas volume in this chamber is measured to be exactly 2.80 L, and the temperature is held constant at 307K. After two hours the pressure inside the chamber falls to 717.0 torr. What mass of oxygen has the mouse consumed? I need help with this. For my initial moles of air I got .1096 and for my final moles of air I got .1048 I subtracted these two and got .0048moles then multiplied it by 32 g/moles (from O2) and got .1536 g as the answer but the program is still telling me its wrong Any help? If you could work out the problem to see where I went wrong that would be great. Thank!Explanation / Answer
initial number of moles=PV/RT
=0.10858
so number of moles of oxygen=0.21*0.10858
=0.0228
we will use the gas equation in this question,
P1/n1=P2/n2
or n2=0.02168
so moles of oxygen consumed=0.0228-0.02168
=0.00112
mass of oxygen consumed=0.00112*32
=0.03584 grams
