Question
Pure Octane has a boiling point of 125.7 degrees Celsius, but can be steam distilled with water at a temperature of 90 degrees Celsius. Calculate the mass of Octane that codistills with each gram of water and the percent composition of the vapor that is produced during the steam distillation. (Again, you'll need vapor pressure of water at the steam distillation temp to solve this problem.)
Note that if you multiply the second equation from question 3 by MW of both oil and water you get :
Mass Oil/mass Water= (P oil)(MW oil) / (P water)(MW water)
ANSWER to 3=(a)0.8 g (b)0.13 gms water

Explanation / Answer
2.8 grams octane for every gram of water. percentcomposition is 74% octane (2.8/3.8) and 26% water (1/3.8)
