Question
2. Your friend knows that you took Human Biology and studied genetics. She asks you to explain a Punnett square to her. How do you explain how a Punnett square is read? Apply the following terms to your explanation: dominant, heterozygous & homozygous, recessive, one-trait & two-trait crosses, dihybrid cross and probability
Essay Format. The response must be thorough and complete. Must be in full sentences not just word answers, at least, a decent size paragraph long. the answers should express your understanding of the concepts. Answer all parts of all questions.
Explanation / Answer
The punnett square is a diagram used to predict the outcome of a cross.
A diploid organism is homozygous if it contains same alleles of a gene at a gene locus.
A diploid organism is heterozygous if it contains two different alleles of a gene at a gene locus.
In genetics, dominant trait is the trait that is manifested in the offsprings even a single dominant allele is present.
In case of recessive trait, two of such alleles are required to manifest the trait.
Dihybrid cross is a cross between two pure lines (varieties, strains) that differ in two observed traits.
A punnett square is drawn to predict whether the offsprings are homozygous or heterozygous for a particular trait based on the alleles. If two recessive allele are present in an offspring, then we can predict that the offspring will have a recessive triat.
