First write and balance the molecular equation : MgCl2(aq) + 2 NaOH(aq) --> Mg(OH)2 (s) + 2 NaCl (aq) Next write the total ionic equations where you break up the molecular equation into ions. (Note: you only break up the molecules that are aqueous!!!) So you get: (Mg2+) + (2Cl-) + (2Na+) + (2OH -) --> Mg(OH)2 (leave it together. Its a solid!) + (2Na+) + (2 Cl-) Look on both sides of the equation and cancel it if it appears twice. That would be Cl and Na in this equation They are called spectator ions. Now you get your net ionic: Mg2+ + 2OH- --> Mg(OH)2
