Question

Please and thank you. I really dont get this.

A chemical reaction is thought to occur via the following steps: 2A doubleheadarrow A2 A2 + B rightarrow A2B A2B + B rightarrow 2AB. What is the overall chemical equation? If the rate law is rate = k[A]2[B], which is the slow step? Please justify your answer. Why is it that step? Or, why is it not one of the other two?

Explanation / Answer

2A + 2B -> 2AB rate law = k[A^2][B] this makes step 1 and step 2 the slowest step since the rate law depends on the slowest step in the entire reaction. Since rate law = k[A^2][B]; 2A -> A2 must be definitely the slowest step since it also depends on B ; we also consider step 2 as well
