Question
You have just been named the new Lab Director for an historic Napa Valley winery. Before you start your FSO2 analysis via the A.O. method you realize you are out of 3% H2O2 and you have 30 samples to run today. You look in the winery food-only refrigerator and find 2 Red Bulls, a half-eaten La Luna burrito, some smelly French cheese, and 40 ml of 30% H2O2. The first use date on the bottle of the concentrated H2O2 is smudged. All you can figure out is that it was opened sometime in 2012. What is wrong with this situation and to whom should you be speaking? After your discussion, why will this be enough to get you through all the FSO2 samples?Explanation / Answer
What is wrong? Food and chemicals should never be stored in the same refrigerator. Also, we need to keep track of the chemicals. The lone bit of good news is that the 30% H2O2 can degrade, but it would only react (with itself) down to 3%, which is usually stable in the refrigerator. 40 ml of 3% should be enough for the samples.
