Question

a). What is the peak estrogen and progesterone concentrations? When do they occur?
B). Is there a difference between the estrogen production on day 12 and day 20? Explain.
C). Where is the progesterone coming from on day 20?
D). What are LH and FSH and what causes them to spike around day 13?
E). What days during the cycle are the chances of pregnancy most likely? Why?
F). What changes would you expect to see in these hormone levels during the next 28 days after a successful pregnance occurrd in this cycle?

Explanation / Answer

a. The peak estrogen concentration is 700 pg/ml and the progesterone concentration is about 7.5 ng/ml. The peak estrogen concentration occurs during the 12-14 days of menstrual cycle which is a follicular phase. One of the follicles produces estrogen. The peak progesterone concentration occurs during luteal phase. It ends just before the menstrual phase. During this phase, the ruptured follicle gets closed after releasing the egg and forms corpus luteum which produces high concentrations of progesterone.

b. Yes, there is a difference in the estrogen production on day 12 and day 20. Because, if there is no egg fertilized, the estrogen levels decrease during the day 20.

c. The progesterone comes from the corpus luteum on day 20.

d. LH refers to leutenizing hormone and FSH to follicle-stimulating hormone. During the follicular phase which lasts for about 13-14 days, the pituitary gland increases the production of FSH. Subsequently, the increased estrogen levels also stimulate the increased LH production.

e. The chances of pregnancy are most likely when the intercourse occurs within 3 days before the ovulation period. Because eggs are released during the ovulation period. Fertilization occurs if the when sperms are present in the reproductive tract before the egg is released.

f. Both the hormones are in increased levels during the next 28 days after a successful pregnancy.
