The European Skylark is a bird who announces claim over his territory by hovering above it and singing loudly. Often, however, this will attract the attention of its main predator, the Merlin falcon. Interestingly, many male birds will continue to sing while they are being chased by the Merlin, as if it is taunting its enemy to try to come and get him. The Marlins often abandon the chase of Skylark birds that continue to sing while being hunted and instead focus their efforts on those males who try to fly away in silence.

Explanation / Answer

Behaviour is playing anti-predation role. The bird's behaviour is protecting it from predation. The bird's who are singing with not be chased by Merlin and those who are not singing/poorly singing will not be found. So, the European Skylark protects itself from predators by singing.
