1). The three major cytoskeletal filaments are, microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments.
Microtubules are the hollow filaments, having a diameter of 20-25 nm. They are composed of a protein called “tubulin.” The assembly of microtubules is controlled by the “centrosome,” which lies near the nucleus. Microtubules play an important role in the formation of spindle fibres (of meiosis and mitosis).
Microfilaments are the rod like structures of actin filament (a muscle protein). Microfilaments form mesh like structures and also provide cell motility. Myofibrils (of the muscle) are the aggregates of microfilaments, which are responsible for muscle contraction.
The diameter of intermediate filaments is about 7 to 10 nm, so they are known as intermediate filaments. Eg: keratins and lamins.
2). During action potential, Na+ and K+ (potassium) ions move across the cell membrane when their respective voltage gated ion channels open.
