Question
Q1. The following two reactions produce C4HsO dioxane, 0 °C, 10 hours H3 CHs02CI, MW 156.5 C4HB, MW-56 C,Hs03Cl, MW 172.5 10 g C4H 0, MW-72 4 g 10 g (catalyst) 02% [ Siwoß)34(H2O)2 H202 Water, room temp, 8 hours H3 H20 C4Ha0 C4Hs 10 g H202 10 g MW = 34 You are asked to recommend one of the two reactions above for use in industry. Assume all the materials in the arrows are solvents and other materials that are not consumed in the reactions a) Determine the yield, atom economy and E-factor for the two reactions (ie complete the table) Reaction A Reaction B Yield(%) Atom Economy E-factor a) Based on E-factor can you recommend one of the two reactions? Why?Explanation / Answer
a) for reaction A for limiting reactant:
10/56 of C4H8 is more than 10/172.5 of C7H5O3Cl hence C7H5O3Cl is limiting reactant
theoretical moles formed for C4H8O = 10/172.5
theoretical mass formed for C4H8O = 10*72/172.5 = 4.17
actual mass formed of C4H8O = 4 g, thus yield = actual/theoretical mass *100 = 4/4.17*100 = 95.9%
for reaction B for limiting reactant:
10/56 of C4H8 is less than 10/34 of H2O2 hence C4H8 is limiting reactant
theoretical moles formed for C4H8O = 10/56
theoretical mass formed for C4H8O = 10*72/56 = 12.86
actual mass formed of C4H4O = 4 g, thus yield = actual/theoretical mass *100 = 4/12.86*100 = 31.1%
b) atom economy = mol weight of desired prod/mol weight of all reactants
for Reaction A , atom economy = 72/(56+172.5) = 0.315
for Reaction B, atom economy = 72/(56+34) = 0.8
c) E-factor = amount of waste/amount of reactants
for reaction A, total reactants weight = 10+10 = 20g
total product = 4g, waste = 20-4 = 16, E factor = 16/20 = 0.8
for recation B, total reactant = 10+10 = 20g,
total product = 4 g, waste = 20-4 = 16, E factor = 16/20 =0.8
d) E factors are same for both recations but we should recommend reaction B because it generates water as waster mostly which is not toxic in compariosn to C7H5o2Cl generated in recation A
