Three rivers merge to form a continuous flowing water as shown below, River B The following conditions exist in this river system River River A River C Volumetric flow rate Concentration Flowing water 0.2x10 Umin 6.1x10' L/min unknown 10 m Isec 4.0 11.7 1.3 unknown Flowing water Calculate the following a) (10 pts.) The volumetric flow rate of river C b) (20 pts.) The concentration of ammonia in the final flowing water, in mg/L

Explanation / Answer

Ans 5 :

The equivalent weight is referred to as mass of one equivalent of any species.

a) For KCl , the oxidation state of KCl is +1.

So the equivalent weight = molecular weight / 1 = 74.5513 /1

= 74.5513 g eq-1

b) Ca(OH)2 supplies two moles of hydroxide ions.

So its equivalent weight = molecular weight / 2

= 74.093 / 2

= 37.0465 g eq-1

c) H3PO4 gives 3 moles of protons per mole

So its equivalnet weight = molecular weight / 3

= 97.994 / 3

= 32.665 g eq-1
