Question

This lab will use a variety of tests to determine the identity of seven organic compounds. Keep all of the testing solutions for a future lab. Introduction Supplies o identification Bag Samples of 7 compounds labeled: A, B, C, D, E, F, G lodine Testing Solution o Potassium Permangante o Benedict's Reagent o pH paper o 7 Pipets o Other supplies o Distilled or bottled water Minimum Safety Expectations Small parts Keep all items away from children Wear goggles-to avoid unintentional splashing Do not consume anything in this kit Glass-Handle glassware with care Background There are seven compounds in this lab. Based on the water solubility, relative pH, reactivity with iodine and with potassium permanganate, the identities of the seven compounds will be elucidated Benzoic Caffeine Acetate Salicylic Acid Thymol Xylitol Acid The "rule of 5" in organic chemistry allows for a quick determination of water solubilit this rule. It would be wise to review those exceptions. There are two compounds contained in y. There are exceptions to this lab that are not appreciably water soluble. When water is added to the container with the sample, e dissolve to allow for additional testing, but there will be visible crystalls that are insoluble in the are three compounds with "acid" in the name. It should come as no surprise that those compounds will red" on universal indicator paper when dissolved in water. There are two that could test as a neutral compounds. if a tested compound results in a sight green ring around the wet spot, consider tha consider that the basic compound. This sight pH change is be For each of the neutral compounds, test on pH paper at least twice. Once immediately after solvat few minutes later. Remember from General Chemistry that the conjugate base of a weak acid will form a ba solution when aqueous. st viewed after a few minutes of the compound being solubil ng and 2 4

Explanation / Answer

Compound A- thymol

Since thymol is insoluble in water and it has pH-9 which shows it is basic in nature . It contains methyl groups and OH group.

Compound B- caffeine

Since caffeine is a base it shows basic pH -9 and it is not soluble in water. It containseems methyl groups so gives positive results for iodine test. OH group iso absent in caffeine so gives negative result for KMNO4 test .

Compound c-xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar molecule. It contains methyl groups and hydroxy groups . Soluble in water.

Compound G- sodium acetate

Sodium acetate is a salt . It is soluble in water. It has neutral or slightly acidic pH. It has a methyl group .

Compound E-salicylic acid

Salicylic acid has no methyl groups. It has acidic pH . And no alcoholic OH group.

Compound F- Benzoic acid it neither as methyl group nor alcoholic OH group it is an acid

Compound D-ascorbic acid

Ascorbic acid has OH groups

It is an acid it contains OH groups but no methyl groups.
