2. This question continues on the next two pages. The compounds that gave each of the following IR spectra contain a carbonyl. Some of them also contain an aromatic ring and/or an alkene. Some of the compounds may contain more than one type of carbonyl or CEC (1 pt per spectrum 4 pts) a. Below each spectrum indicate whether the compound contains an aldehyde, 1 amide, 2e amide, carboxylic acid, ester, ketone, or strained cyclic ketone. b. Below each spectrum indicate whether the compound contains an aromatic ring, an alkene, both or neither. Spectrum 1:
Types of C=O
In this spectrum 10 amide is present ==> 3362 & 3179 these two consecutive peaks are due to N-H bond stretching.
Types of C=C
Aromatic ring is present ==> 1613 & 1430 these two consecutive peaks are only observed in case of aromatic ring, basically if aromatic ring is present then due to C=C stretching one peak comes at higher than 1400 and one higher than 1600 cm-1.
Spectrum 2:
Type of C=O
Aldehyde is present ==> peaks at 3436 & 2963 cm-1 represents that, C-H stretching
again peak at 1727 represents the carbonyl C=O stretching
Type of C=C
peak at 3436 represents sp2 C-H stretching
Here alkene is present
Spectrum 3:
type of C=O
ketone due to the peak at 1683
alkene is present due to the peak at 3063 (sp2)
it is an conjuated ketone
Spectrum 4:
type of C=O
acid is present
alkene is present... it is a conjugated acid
