AC ACCURAC We all strive in, you wa they want result of as bs lt, Post-Lab 04 (Part 1) Report Sheet Name Canmen Liang Lab Section MR Part 1A: 1) When you are diluting the 6M sodium hydroxide solution, why do you not have to know exactly how much water you add to the stock sodium hydroxide solution? art 1B: Would the molarity be overestimated or underestimated from the actual molarity if a student uses a darker pink shade as the endpoint? Explain using the mathematical relationships in your calculations. (Hint: Refer to #3 on the "Lab Notebook Conclusions Evaluation" Handout from the first day of lab as a model.) 1)Explanation / Answer
Part 1A)
1) the exact amount of water added does not matter when diluting a stock solution of NaOH because the overall moles of NaOH present remains the same at all conditions in the total volume. The moles of NaOH reacting is determined by titration.
---
Part 1B)
1) Dark pink shade color indicates addition of excess of NaOH to the solution, that is beyond the actual end point of titration.
Thus, moles of NaOH would be higher
moles of NaOH = molarity of NaOH x volume of NaOH added
moles of NaOH = moles of acid reacted
moles of acid reacted = higher
therefore,
molarity of unknown acid = moles of acid (higher)/volume of acid solution taken
would also be higher.
The molarity thus in this case would be overestimated from the actual molarity of the acid solution.
