Organic chemistry post lab questions. I appreciate any help. Organic chemistry post lab questions. I appreciate any help.of the Eutectic Point of Cinnamic Acid and Melting Point Determination of an Unknown Solid by Identification erimento1: xed Melting Point and ea Mixture; tre Exp. 01: Melting Point Post-Lab Questions de 1. What would be the effect on the observed melting point range if the sample was: (8 pts) a. too small b. too large c. poorly packed d. heated too rapidly 2. A student was given a white solid for an unknown. The melting point range was 119.6-121.1 °C. The student has previously worked with benzoic acid and observed that it was a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 121-122 °C. (2pts) Can the student conclude that the unknown compound is benzoic acid bae on this information? Why or why not? a. b. What additional experiment should be done to verify the unknown compound as benzoic acid?
Explanation / Answer
Here you go:
1. The melting point change on the following factors:
a) If too small: melting point is the temperature at which the compound transfers to a liquid from solid. Thus it doesn't matter whether the sample is in small amount or latgr.. M.pt will not change.
b) too large: same explanation here also. M.pt foesndo changes.
c) poorly packed: here the sample is packed poorly i.e. it has some void spaces which contains the air and the air gets heated and as a result it will fast forward the melting of sample and it will melt as lower temperature. Thus M.pt. here will be lowered.
d)heated too rapidly: In this case the aggregate doesn't get the time to break its lattice properly and thus M.pt. is reached early.
2. The benzoic acid problem:
a) Yeah he can consider it as a benzoic acid sample since it belongs to the range of literature m.pt. of benzoic acid. And some times due to improper measurements what happens is that m.pt. may come early so the sample can be benzoic acid.
b) He can further check its special group by doing other tests for carboxylic acid as "esterification test" or the "Sodium bicarbonate test". That's all!!
I hope it helps!!
