Question
Osed melting point capillary tubes siou a "broken glass" container. Solid chemicals sho container labeled "Solid Waste." Used filter paper may be place uld be placed in a ceramic waste d in the trash after in the solid waste container. Any aqueous solution used excess solid has been placed used during recrystallization should be placed into an "Aqueou s" waste bottle. Acetone for washing glassware should be placed into an "Acetone" waste bottle Questions: 1. Why is it important to add the solvent to the solid, rather than the other way round? 2. Why is it important to have solvent left in the recrystallization flask after the solution has cooled and before isolating the crystals by vacuum filtration? 3. When performing vacuum filtration to isolate a solid, why: a) is the vacuum line broken before the water aspirator is turned off? should the filter flask not be connected directly to a water aspirator pump? b) 4.) Why is melting point reported as a range? Where do the two temperatures come from? Recrystallization and Melting PointExplanation / Answer
2)after the solution has cooled, crystals are formed and the impurities remains in solvent.
If no solvent is left the chance of incorporating impurities into crystals is more and we don’t get pure crystals.so it is important to have solvent after the solution has cooled and before isolating the crystals by vacuum filtration.
