In Europe, gasoline efficiency is measured in km/L. If your car's gas mileage is 21.0 mi/gal, how many liters of gasoline would you need to buy to complete a 142-km trip in Europe? Explanation / Answer

A) Given that car's gas mileage = 21.0 mi/gal

This means,

21 mi can be completed with 1 gal.

i.e. 21 (1/0.6214) km = 33.8 km can be completed with 1 gal [ 1 km = 0.6214 mi i.e. 1 mi = 1/0.6214 km]

So,   33.8 km can be completed with 3.78 L [ 1 gal = 3.78 L ]

142 km can be completed with ? L

? = ( 142 km/ 33.8 km) x 3.78 L

= 15.88 L

Therefore,

15.88 liters of gasoline need to buy to complete 142 km trip in Europe.

B) Given that car's gas mileage = 36.0 mi/gal

This means,

36 mi can be completed with 1 gal.

i.e. 36 (1/0.6214) km = 57.93 km can be completed with 1 gal [ 1 km = 0.6214 mi i.e. 1 mi = 1/0.6214 km]

So, 57.93 km can be completed with 3.78 L    [ 1 gal = 3.78 L ]

103 km can be completed with ? L ( Given that travelling distance is 103 km per day)

? = ( 103 km/57.93 km) x 3.78 L

= 6.72 L

Therefore,

per day, 6.72 liters of gasoline required.

per week = 7 x 6.72 litres = 47.04 liters of gasoline required.

Given that

Cost of 1 liter gas = 1.10 euros = 1.10 x 1.26 dollars [ Given that 1 euro = 1.26 dollars]

= 1.386 dollars

Hence,

cost of 47.04 liters of gas = 47.04 x 1.386 dollars

= 65.2 dollars

Therefore,

65.2 dollars money to be spent on gas in one week .
