Question

Mty Notes O Auk Your Teacher 3. 2/3 points | Previous Answers BLB12 17.P.027 A buffer solution contains 0.18 mol of acetic acid and 0.12 mol of sodium acetate in 1.10 L. (See the dissociation constants for acids table.) (a) What is the pH of this buffer? 4.57 (b) What is the pH of the buffer after the addition of 0.04 mol of KOH? 15.18 Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error.

Explanation / Answer

b)

moles of acetic acid = 0.18

moles of sodium acetate = 0.12

moles of KOH added = 0.04 mol

pH = pKa + log [salt + C / acid - C]

    = 4.75 + log [0.12 + 0.04 / 0.18 - 0.04]

pH = 4.81

pH of the buffer = 4.81
