Question

1. The hydroperoxide ion, HO2– (aq), reacts with permanganate ion, MnO4– (aq) to produce MnO2 (s) and oxygen gas. Balance the equation for the oxidation of hydroperoxide ion to O2(g) by permanganate ion in a basic solution.

2. Write balanced (a) molecular, (b) overall ionic, and (c) net ionic equations for the reaction between an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid, H3PO4(aq), and an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. The products are sodium phosphate and water.

3. Write a balanced molecular reaction for the reaction between solid aluminum hydroxide and a solution of hydrobromic acid. Include the state of each species.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 :

The unbalanced skeletal reaction will be :

HO2- + MnO4- = MnO2 + O2

Start balancing the reaction by writing oxidation and reduction half reactions seperately.

Now start balancing all the atoms . Balance oxygen and hydrogen atoms , by adding water molecules and protons respectively. Balance the charges and add the half reactions together and simplify to get the final balanced reaction as :

3HO2- + 2MnO4- + H2O = 2MnO2 + 3O2 + 5OH-
