PRELAB QUESTIONS: Friedel-Crafts Acylation -Day 2 Name 1. At the end of Day 1, you finished refluxing your reaction and quenched it by pouring it over ice and concentrated HCL in addition to dichioromethane and water, what five major compounds are now in your crude reaction mixture? Fill in these structures/formulas in the first box of the flowchart shown below. Since you dont know the identity of your unknown vet, lust iist it as ·unknown, and the Droduct as-acvated unknown'. Then complete the rest of the flowchart showing where each of these compounds goes during the extraction steps. INote: inorganic acids are water-solubie, but small organic acias will aissoive to signiricant amounts in both the organic and aqueous lavers). identity which layer is on TUP in each separation and which ayers shouid bp H,O, CH.C Scparate iayers cal,Cl i Fxtract with CHC, 2. Where in the work-up will the dichloromethane he removed? A. in the extraction with the first aqueous layer H. in the extraction with the aqueous NaHCOs layer C with the drying agent D. during the simple distillation t. during the vacuum disailation F. it never gets removed s. Where in the work-up will the unreacted starting material be removed? (Same chol as above) biv a brown, orange, or yellowish color because of the presence or sma 4. Your crude product is probably brown, amounts of very high-botiing impurities we will call tar. Wnere in the same choices as abovej Karen LongLast updated zoi71. KueniExplanation / Answer
1) Two starting materials, catalyst such as AlCl3, acylated unknown product and lewis acid catlyst intermediate will in the crude reaction mixture. The formulas of these are given
RCOR' where RCO is an acyl group while R' is an aromatic or alkyl system
RCOL where RCO is an acyl group while L is a lewis acid catlyst.
RCOCl is a unknown acyl chloride.
2) D. During the simple distillation.
Dichloromethane is a low boiling point solvent which can be easily removed hjust by simple distillation.
3) Depending on the choice of starting metaerials. By vacumn distilation we can removed the starting material if required otherwise by simple distilation also we can remove the starting material.
4) orange color it will form. Tar will be removed during extraction of the product through CH2Cl2. Tar will generally use to come on the interface of organic and aqeous layers so it will easy to remove tar after collecting the organic layer.
