Question

Using Le Chatelier's Principle to predict the result of cha... Hydrogen and fluorine react to form hydrogen fluoride, like this: H2(g)+p 2(g) ? 2 HF(g) The reaction is exothermic. Suppose a mixture of H2, F2 and HF has come to equilibrium in a closed reaction vessel. Predict what change, if any, the perturbations in the table below will cause in the composition of the mixture in the vessel. Also decide whether the equilibrium shifts to the right or left. perturbation change in composition shift in equilibriumm to the right to the left The temperature is raised. The pressure of HF w O (none) to the right The temperature is The pressure of F2 mil to the left lowered 0 (none)

Explanation / Answer

By Le- Chatlier's principle if any change is made to a system in equilibrium, the system rearrange itself so as to attain the equilibrium. If the temperature is increased the system shifts to the side of endothermic reaction ie, if the forward reaction is endothermic then the shift will towards products side and if reverse reaction towards reactants side.

So here the forward reaction is exothermic ie, the reverse reaction is endothermic.

If the temperature is increased the equilibrium shift towards reactants side ie, to the left and so the pressure of HF will decrease.

If the temperature is decreased the equilibrium will shift to products side ie, to the right and so the pressure of the F2 will decrease.
