Question

s Which anode cellwold produce the White the cen what is the potentia. ?. B. Explore Electrol for this cer? When using the LED s important conductivity device, you will be puting the leads data you e solution sing th ninsed off o the data you need to understand the behavior of these substances onderstand the on th of deioni wampes You can your are teating I Sodium chloride is an ionio s also a 24 well plate that you can use to test the solutions. Rinse this plate in deionized w the leads using the squeeze bottle of deionized water in your locker Wrs very important er of was eads of the device, as this will completely mess up the There is a bin with solid sodium chionide. NaCi, and sucrose (sugar) compound, whie sucrose is a molecular compound There other solutions in 1. Devise an experiment using the NaCI and sugar to test this hypothesis When lonic compounds dissolve in water, they release ions into solution that can conduct electricity. Wite a brie sketch of your experiment and then carry it out Based on this very limited sample size, did your experiment support this hypothesis? 2 Test the conductivity of the other solutions that are available Pipet the solution into a well for the test Which solutions release ions in water and which do not? What's the evidence of the release of ions? 3 Substances that dissolve in water can be classified as electrolytes if they release ions when dissolved, and as non-electrolytes it they do not telease ions NaCi and Classify each of the solutions tested as being electrolytes or as non-electrolytes the sugar solution. 4. Electrolytes can further be classified into strong and weak electrolytes. Strong el completely, but completely and completely dissociate into ions in water. Weak electrolytes dissolve only a fraction of the molecules dissociate into ions. Which substance do you thi job and conducting electricity, strong electrolytes or weak electrolytes? Explain why 5. of the substances you classifled as electrolytes, which do you think were strong electrolytes and 5. Of the substances which were weak electrolytes? What evidence do you have to support these classifications? C. Set Up Cells and Do Some Tests. There is a bin on the bench with most of the reagents you will need - this bin is to be shared with the group sitting across from you. Pay attention to labels and take care not to contaminate solutions. Get a beaker for waste at your bench- any solution in the pipet that you don't put in your cell needs to be disposed of as waste -do not return it to the stock solution bottle.

Explanation / Answer

We need to design an experiment to prove that when ionic compounds are dissolved in water they conduct electricity.

Let us a take a beaker of deionised water and add sugar to it. Sugar is a molecular compound and does not break into ions in water. Therefore, if a LED conductivity device is used, the bulb wil not glow. Now, rinse of the leads of the device before dipping them in a solution of NaCl in deionized water. The bulb will glow brightly as NaCl is an ionic compound and in its presence water molecules are also dissociated into H+ and OH- ions that conduct electricity. Hence from this small experiment, it can be proved that when ionic compounds are dissolved in water they conduct electricity. Please make sure that the leads are washed carefully with deionised water before and after each experiment and always use deionized water in all conductometric experiments.
