16) Monochloroethene is used to make polyvinylchloride (PVC). It has a density of 2.56 g/L at 22.8 °C and 756 mmHg. What is the molar mass of monochloroethene?

Explanation / Answer

We know , P * M = d * R * T. -------(1)

P = Pressure in atm , M = molar mass (g/mol)

d = density ( g/L) , R = gas constant = 0.082 atm L mol-1K-1

T = Temperure in Kelvin

P = 756 mmHg = 756 atm / 760 = 0.9947 atm

d = 2.56 g/L, T = 22.8 oC = (22.8 + 273.15) K = 295.95 K

From (1)

0.9947 atm * M = 2.56 g/L * 0.082 atm L mol-1K-1 * 295.95 K

0.9947 * M = 62.126 g/mol

M = 62.126 g/mol / 0.9947 = 62.46 g/mol
