Question

. Some sulfanilamide was lost in the putificatión process. Where did it go? 2 a) If a sample contains 7%impurity, what is the highest % recovery you could theoretically obtain? b) Why couldn't you ever obtain that %? 3. Purified sulfanilamide has a higher melting point than the impure sulfanilamide you started wi which has a higher melting point than the sulfanilamide recovered from the mother liquor why in terms of purity 4. Explain why ethyl alcohol dissolves sulfanilamide and acetanilide. 5. From the figure shown here, a) What type of slope would indicate a b) What type of slope would indicate a c) What causes more crystallization: Choosing a Solvent for Crystallization Poor solvent-product highly soluble at any temperature good solvent? poor solvent? cooling with a good solvent or poor 8 solvent- product highly soluble at high temps and poorly soluble at low temps solvent? Poor solvent-product not highly sokible at any temperature Temperature, C 6. Sulfanilamide and the impurity acetanilide are about equally soluble in ethyl alcohol. a) b) c) Why did only sulfanilamide crystallize when the solution was cooled? Could sulfanilamide that contains 50% acetanilide be purified by crystallization? Would this same crystallization from ethyl alcohol work to remove a small amount of sulfanilamide impurity from an acetanilide sample? 7. What common household cleaning device removes liquid the same way a Craig tube does? Pane 7 of8

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 :

Some sulfanilamide solid may have got precipitated on the filter paper , while its purification.

Due to this some of the valuable product is lost , which result into a lower percent recovery of the compound.

The sample could have also precipitated in the bottom of beaker , in which it was collected after passing through filter paper.

So a continious heat source must be provided during the process , which eliminates such errors.
