Question
1. A reaction system contains C4H10, C4H8, C4H6, and H2.
i) Derive a set of independent chemical reactions describing the stoichiometry using Denbigh’s method.
ii) Derive a set of independent chemical reactions describing the stoichiometry by solving the homogeneous system of equations, A = 0 , where A is the formula matrix and n is a vector of stoichiometric coefficients. Solve by transforming the formula matrix into reduced echelon form using the rref( ) function in Matlab and setting up the N matrix.
iii) Show that the sets of equations obtained in parts i) and ii) are equivalent.
Explanation / Answer
C4H10 =C4H6 + 2H2
C4H10 = C4 H8 +H2
ONLY TWO INDEPENDENT REACTIONS
1 0 -1 -2
1 -1 0 -1
rref(a)= 1 0 -1 -2
0 1 -1 -1
both are independent reactions
