The mass of the ice cube is 1 1.8 g, and its initial temperature is-14.8 The water resulting from the melted ice reaches the temperature of your skin, 31.2 °C. How much heat is absorbed by the ice cube and resulting water? Assume that all the water remains in your hand. Constants may be found here. Explanation / Answer

Ans 1

Heat absorbed by ice cube to melt into water

= heat absorbed byvsensible heat + heat absorbed by latent heat

= m x Cp x (T2-T1) + m x H fusion

= 11.8 g x 2.11 J/gC x (0 + 14.8)C + 11.8 g x 334 J/g

= 368.4904 + 3941.2

Q1 = 4309.6904 J

Heat absorbed by liquid water to reach the equilibrium temperature of 31.2 °C

Q2 = m x Cp x (T2-T1)

= 11.8 g x 4.184 J/gC x (31.2 - 0)

= 1540.3814 J

Total heat absorbed = 4309.6904 + 1540.3814

= 5850.07 J
