Question
. An open vessel of 1 m in diameter and 2 m tall is being splash-filled with ethyl acetate (C,H,O2) liquid. The vessel takes 30 min to fill. The local ventilation rate is 0.50 m/s. a. Estimate the local concentration (in ppm) of ethyl acetate. Compare to the TLV. b. Estimate the local concentration (in ppm) if the vessel is covered with a flat metal sheet and the filling is done through a 5-cm-diameter hole. Compare to the TLV. c. Which filling method do you recommend and why? For both cases T, = 25°C and the ambient pressure is 1 atm. The specific gravity of the ethyl acetate is 0.90.Explanation / Answer
Volume of the vessel= 3.14*r^2*h = 3.14*0.5^2*2= 1.57m^3
Time taken by vessel to fill= 30 min
Incoming flowrate= 1.57/(30*60)m^3/s = 8.722 *10^-4m^3/s
Ventilation rate = 0.5m^3/s
(a). Local conc. of Ethyl acetate = incoming flowrate/ventilation rate = 17.44*10^-4 parts= 1744 ppm
(b). New flowrate = New volume/30 minutes= 3.14*0.025^2*2/(30*60) m^3/s= 2.181*10^-6 m^3/s
New local concentration = 4.362*10^-6 parts = 4.362 ppm
TLV is 400 ppm so second method is best one as there is less exposure compared to first one.
