Question
25. Which has the greater entropy, a polymeric molecule or a mixture of its constituent monomers? 26. How does the entropy change when glucose undergoes combustion? G,H, 206 + 602 6 CO2 + 6 H2O 27. A soccer coach keeps a couple of instant cold packs in her bag in case one of her players suffers a muscle injury. Instant cold packs are composed of a plastic bag containing a smaller water bag and solid ammonium nitrate. In order to activate the cold pack, the bag is kneaded until the smaller water bag breaks, which allows the released water to dissolve the ammonium nitrate. The equation for the dissolution of ammonium nitrate in water is shown below. How does the cold pack work? H2O NH4NO3(s) NHJ (aq) NO3(aq) H = 26.4 kJ-mol-1 pers carry hot packs with them, especially when camp- 28. ing derfing the winter months or at high altitudes. Their design is similar to that described in Problem 27, except that calcium chlo- ride is used in place of the ammonium nitrate. The equation for the dissolution of calcium chloride in water is shown below. How does the hot pack work? H2O CaCl2(s) Ca2+ (aq) + 2Cl"(aq) AH=-81 kJ-mol-1 29. For the reaction in which reactant A is converted to product B, tell whether this process is favorable at (a) 4°C and (b) 37°C H (kJ mol-') 54 SU.K.molExplanation / Answer
From the equation given of CaCl2 we can see that the reaction is exothermic with heat of solution being -81 KJ/mol
Hot pack works very much similar to slow packs. Here the CaCL2 in the form of solid powder is already present in the solid pack. When we add water in to the pack, CaCl2 dissociates as per the equation given. In the process it realses -81 KJ/mol in the form of heat. This heat is used to warm/cook the food. In some of the hot packs, Water is already present but seperated with the help of seal. When this seal is broken and the pack is shaken vigerously heat of solution occures and generates heat.
