Question

Whenever we form compound from its constituting ions the species are cross multiplied with the number equal to the valency of the other ions. For example in Cr^+3 and OH^-, OH^- will be multiplied by 3 because cation has 3 unit positive charge and Cr^+3 will be multiplied by 1 because of 1 unit negative charge on anion. So, in this case the empirical formula for the ionic compound is Cr(OH)3 and the name is chromium hydroxide.

In case of Ca^+2 and CO3^-2, both the ions have two unit charge ,so,the empirical formula is CaCO3 and name of compound is calcium carbonate.

Similarly for Na^+1 and IO4^-1 the empirical formula for ionic compound is NaIO4 and it's name is sodium periodate.

Explanation / Answer
