Question

A) Distillation is the technique in which, substances with different boiling range can be seprated b heating up to certain temperature using fractional distillation method. Thus, white gas has boiling range of 30-90oC and white spirit has boiling range of 145-175oC can be seprated using fractional distillition. If simple distillation is used then the distillate contains mixture of both white gas and white spirit. Simple distillation is not usful to seprate these liquids.

B) Diesel has boiling range of 180 to 360oC, which is not so close to the boiling rage of white gas (30-90oC). Thus it will be much easier to seprate thse in comparison to white spirit mixture.

C) White gas has highest vapor pressure then white spirit or diesel. Hence white gas is most dengerous.

D) When we seperate white spirit from white gas there is always some part of white gas remains in the white spirit, which make this mixture as comparitively higher vapor pressure then the pure white spirit. As white spirit seprated from white gas has higher vapor pressure, it is more dengeorus.

E) Gasoline has boiling range of 35-200oC, which is lesser then diesel. Hence the distillate will be enriched with gasoline as compared to dieslel.

F) The residue which is left after distillation of the mixture of diesel and gasoline, most part of gasoline will be distilled out leaving behind residue enriched with diesel.

G) Simple distillation can seprate the mixture of dye and gasoline as the dye is solid in nature. Hence fractional distillation is not needed to seprate dye (solid) and liquid gasoline.

Explanation / Answer

. A camper is trying to find enough fuel for his lantern. He has several containers of hydrocarbons. He mixes white gas and white spirit. White gas has a boiling range of 30-90C. The white gas has a boiling range from 30-90C. The white spirit has a boiling range of 145-175C A. Can this mixture be separated by simple distillation? Explain. B. Is this mixture easier or more difficult to separate than a mixture of white gas and diesel? C. Out of white gas, white spirit, and diesel, which is the most dangerous? Explain. The D. Which is safer, white spirit or white spirit that has been separated from a mixture of white E. If a mixture of gasoline, which can be modeled as CaH18, and diesel is distilled is the Diesel has a boiling range of 180-360C. Explain. highest vapor pressure is the most dangerous because the vapors can burn or explode. spirit and white gas? Explain distillate (recondensed vapor) enriched in gasoline or diesel? Explain. F. Is the residue (stuff left in the still pot) in part E enriched in gasoline or diesel? Explain. G. Some gasolines have dye added. Explain why gasoline, which can be modeled as CsH1e, can be separated from blue dye below using simple distillation rather than requiring fractional distillation. NH2 O OH SO3Na NaO3S OH O NH2 C.I.
