Question
a) Nanoribbons are nano strips of material which is made up of long chain of one type of atoms. If it is a carbon atom, then nanoribbons are called as graphene nanoribbons. Similarly, for Silicene nanoribbons and for others too.
b) Nanoribbons, particularly graphene nanoribbons are prepared by three methods.
1. Lithography 2. Bottom-up 3. Unzipping
Lithography consists of cutting of nanoribbons from graphene. It yields single layer nanoribbons, hence can not be used for bulk quantity production.
Bottom-up involves fabrication of nanoribbons from pre-synthesized polymer chains based on cyclization. It is understandable now that it is multi-step synthesis.
Unzipping is based on longitudinal opening of multi walled carbon nanotubes.
c) Edges of lithographically produced nanoribbons are jagged. While other two methods configure edges of nanoribbons automatically.
d) Methods to produce nanotubes:-
Plasma arcing- applying an electric current across two carbonaceous electrodes in an inert gas atmosphere.
Arc discharge method- arc vaporization of two carbon rods placed end to end in an enclosure filled with an inert gas at low pressure.
