Explanation / Answer

Depression in freezing point occur when a salt is added to water. The depression in freezing point is a colligative property. Colligative property depends upon no. Of moles of solute dissolved. I,e colligative property is directly proportional to molality of solution. Hence higher the no. Of moles of solute dissolve higher is the depression in freezing point.

1. 0.21m NaBr - 0.21 moles of sodium bromide is present in the solution - lowest freezing point

2. 0.17m NaNO3 - no. Of moles is 0.17 second lowest freezing point

3. 0.12m KNO3- no. Of moles is 0.12 third lowest freezing point

Depression in freezing point also depends upon no. Of particales (ions) present in the solution. But All the above salts have same no. Of ions per molecule I,e 1 cation and one anion. hence freezing point in above three cases can be judged only by the molality of the solution.

4. 0.39m sucrose - no.of moles is 0.39- highest freezing point. although the molality is higher than KNO3 NaNO3 and NaBr its freezing point is highest because its a non electrolyte. A non electrolyte dissociation is less hence no. Of particales (ions) present in solution is less (only molecules exist) hence they don't depress the freezing point much.

Note: Highest freezing point means higher temperature. Ex. 0 degree Celsius and -27 degree Celsius, 0 degree is higher freezing point than -27degree celcius. I e -27 degree Celsius is lower freezing point.
