Question
In question 5C. why couldn't you just make step 1. (-)OAc
Is it because its an SN2 reaction, which would cause inversion? Is that why you need to first do a Sn2 replacement with I(-) before preceding onto the second SN2 reaction with acetate? Just wanted to make sure that was the only reason. the more i type this out the more i feel confident i understand whats going on lol.
Explanation / Answer
You are correct. Even no of SN2 will give retension of configuration. (two consecutive SN2). Odd no of Sn2 (one Sn2) will give inversion of configuration. In 5C you need retension of configuration. So you need to two Sn2 reactions.
