Alka-Seltzer and the escaping gas Alka-Seltzer is an effervescent antacid/pain reliever tablet and it is used for the relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, and stomach aches. Each Alka-Seltzer tablet is comprised of a combination of 1000 mg of anhydrous citric acid (C&H807;), 1916 mg of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCOs) and 325 mg of aspirin. The antacid effect that Alka-Seltzer provides is due to the reaction of the sodium bicarbonate with excess acid in your stomach. When an acid and a base react with one another they neutralize the pH in your stomach and provide relief. The reaction between an acid and a base is called a neutralization reaction
