Question

14. Adenine (space-filling model shown below) is a nucleobase molecule whose derivatives are useful in biological processes such as cellular respiration. It is a compound that contains carbon, hydrogen, AND nitrogen. Elemental combustion analysis reveals that adenine is 44.45% C and 3.73% H by mass. The molar mass of adenine is 135.13 g/mol a) What is the mass percent of N in adenine? b) What is the empirical formula of adenine? c) What is the molecular formula of adenine? d) A different compound has the same empirical formmla as adenine but with a molar mass of 270.26 amu. What is the molecular formula of this compound?

Explanation / Answer

a . as the compound contains 3 elements only ...

so the sum of percentage of three element = 100

now C = 44.45%

H= 3.73%

N = x%

% of (C + H + N) = 100

44.45 + 3.73 + x = 100

x = 100 - 48.48

x = 51.52 %

now C = 44.45 , H =3.73 , N = 51.52 (divide each element by its atomic mass because we have given mass percentage)

C = 44.45/ 12 =3.70

H = 3.73 / 1.009=3.697 or 3.7

N = 3.68 or 3.7

here we can see all are present in same ratio 3.7 each so simple ratio we get 1:1..

b . so our empirical formula = CHN

c. empirical mass of CHN = 12 + 1 + 14 = 27

now molecular mass = 135.13 g/mole

now n (multiplying factor by which each element is to multiplied so that we can get the molecular formula )= 135.13/27 = 5.0048 or simply 5

so our molecule will be C5H5N5

d . now again multiplying factor = molecular mass / empirical mass

= 270.26/27 = 10.0096 or simple ratio = 10

so our new formula becomes = C10H10N10.
