17 REACTION RATES The Pre Lab 1. a) Define or explain the following: rate of a chemical reaction activation energy b) A reaction occurs where the concentration of reactant A changes from 0.74 moles/liter to 0.63 moles/liter in 20 seconds. How many moles of A react in each liter of solution during the 20 second time period? Calculate the average rate of the reaction where A is being used up average rate - ime periocd Several factors that affect reaction rates are listed. Use the collision model for chem- ical reactions to provide an explanation as to why each factor can influence the rate of a reaction. 2. quantity or concentration of reactants temperature catalyst

Explanation / Answer

1.rate of chemical reaction is defined as the moles of reactant disappeared per unit volume per unit time or if the product is formed, the rate of reaction is defined as the moles of product formed per unit volume per unit time.

2. Initial concentration of A= 0.74 moles/liter, concentration of A after 20 seconds= 0.63 moles/liter

moles of A reacted in 20 seconds/Liter= 0.74-0.63=0.11 moles in 20 seconds

rate of reaction = (0.63-0.74)/20, =-0.0055 moles/sec rate is negative since A is consumed during he reaction.

3. According to collision theory, for a reaction to proceeds, there has to be collison between molecules and collisions which give rise to product are called as fruitful collisions. According to this theort, the

no of collisons per unit volume is proportional to product of concentration of reactant A and B if the reactants involve binary molecules.

The no of collisions per unit volume is proportional to sqrt of absoulte temperature.

The catalyst is foreign substance which increases the no of collision between the molecules.
