Question

Paragraph Styles A new crystalline phase is discovered. The sample of ibuprofen can be heated and cooled in different ways, and sometimes a specific sequence of cooling, heating, and resting (annealing) will favor the crystallization of new polymorphs from the amorphous phase. In one case, the crystalline powder in a sealed pan is melted by heating to 373 °K (100 °C), then rapidly cooled to 143 °K (-130 °C) where it is annealed for 1 hour. The sample is then heated to 258 °K (15 C), and held at this temperature for annealing for 5 or more hours. The material that results is thought to be a new crystalline isomorphic form of ibuprofen. This material is studied by DSC by cooling it to 175 °K once again and recording the thermogram from 175 °K to 373 °K shown in Figure 2c.
